3-Zone defense
The Immediate Shoreline (0–5')
- The Goal: Prevent ignition from embers.
- The Work: Removing all combustible mulch, dry leaves, and overhanging limbs directly touching the structure.
The Intermediate Defense (5–30')
- The Goal: Create a "Lean, Clean, and Green" break to stop fire spread.
- The Work: Thinning trees to maintain 10ft between crowns and removing "ladder fuels" (low branches) that allow ground fire to climb into the canopy.
The Extended Perimeter (30–100'+)
- The Goal: Reduce the energy of an approaching fire.
- The Work: Strategically reducing fuel density, removing dead timber, and managing ground vegetation to slow fire speed and intensity.
