Wildfire Mitigation & Fuel Reduction
Defensible Space Implementation
We follow the established “Zone” system to create a tiered buffer around your property. This approach reduces the “Home Ignition Zone” risk by removing combustible materials and thinning dense vegetation that allows fire to climb into the canopy.
The Ignition Zone (0–5')
- Combustible Removal: We systematically identify and remove "wick" fuels, such as dry leaves, pine needles, and wood mulch, that can carry a ground fire directly to your siding or foundation.
- Perimeter Hardening: Clearing organic debris from roof valleys, gutters, and under-deck areas where wind-driven embers naturally collect during a fire event.
- Vegetation Management: Ensuring no overhanging limbs or high-volatile plants remain within this critical 5-foot buffer.
The Intermediate Defense (5–30')
- Ladder Fuel Removal: We prune low-hanging tree limbs to a height of 8–10 feet. This ensures that if a fire moves through the grass, it cannot "climb" into the tree canopy.
- Crown Spacing: We strategically thin clusters of trees to maintain a minimum 10-foot gap between the outer edges of tree crowns, preventing fire from jumping from tree to tree.
- Fuel Bed Disruption: Systematic removal of tall grasses, volatile shrubs, and accumulated deadfall to keep fire intensity low and manageable.
The Extended Perimeter (30–100'+)
- Selective Timber Thinning: We reduce the overall density of the forest stand. By removing suppressed or diseased trees, we reduce the total "fuel load" and create a more resilient timber stand.
- Dead-and-Down Management: Heavy logs and old slash piles are cleared to prevent long-duration heat that can bake the soil and kill healthy mature trees.
- Tactical Access: We ensure that access routes for emergency vehicles are clear of encroaching vegetation and hazardous "slash," meeting Firewise standards for property safety.
Post-Mitigation: Slash & Debris Management
- Chipping & Broadcasting: For high-visibility areas near the home, we chip the debris and spread it to a depth that prevents soil erosion while remaining fire-safe.
- Pile Burning: In larger Zone 2 areas, we create controlled slash piles for winter burning, adhering strictly to DNRC regulations and local air quality standards.
- Haul-Away Services: For properties where on-site disposal isn't an option, we provide full-service removal to ensure your defensible space is left pristine and hazard-free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my property look "clear-cut"?
No. Our goal is stewardship. We use selective thinning to remove the hazardous growth while keeping your mature, healthy trees. The result is a park-like aesthetic that actually increases property value.
Are you insured?
Yes. Missoula Defensible Space is fully insured for wildfire mitigation and forestry work in the state of Montana.
Do you work with insurance companies or HOA requirements?
Yes. We can perform work to meet specific insurance audit requirements or Firewise USA® community standards to help you maintain coverage or reduce premiums.
When is the best time of year to perform mitigation work?
Do I need to be home while the work is being performed?
How often does defensible space need to be maintained?
Mitigation is not a one-time event; it is an ongoing stewardship. Depending on the growth rate of your specific vegetation, we recommend a light maintenance “touch-up” every 2–3 years to manage new growth and ensure your Zone 0 and Zone 1 buffers remain code-compliant.
Can you help with the grant application paperwork?
Absolutely. Navigating DNRC or FireSafe Montana grants can be technical. We provide the specific project descriptions, maps, and thinning specifications required by auditors to help ensure your application is professional and positioned for approval.

Ready to Implement Your Mitigation Plan?
Schedule a private consultation to review your property goals and discuss how our specialized labor aligns with local subsidy program requirements.
The Implementation Consult Includes:
- Project Mapping: Converting your official assessment into a tactical work plan.
- Execution Strategy: Pinpointing the specific zones requiring immediate thinning or clearing.
- Reimbursement Alignment: Ensuring our work meets the Firewise standards necessary for potential cost-share eligibility.
Missoula Defensible Space is a private contractor. Official risk assessments for grant eligibility are handled directly through Missoula Fire Ready or the DNRC.
