Wildfire Mitigation & Fuel Reduction

Defensible Space Implementation

We follow the established “Zone” system to create a tiered buffer around your property. This approach reduces the “Home Ignition Zone” risk by removing combustible materials and thinning dense vegetation that allows fire to climb into the canopy.

Zone 0

The Ignition Zone (0–5')

Zone 1

The Intermediate Defense (5–30')

Zone 2

The Extended Perimeter (30–100'+)

Post-Mitigation: Slash & Debris Management

A disciplined defense requires a clean finish. Reducing fuel loads only works if the resulting debris is properly handled. Depending on your property’s access and local regulations, we manage the “slash” through three primary methods:

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my property look "clear-cut"?

No. Our goal is stewardship. We use selective thinning to remove the hazardous growth while keeping your mature, healthy trees. The result is a park-like aesthetic that actually increases property value.

Yes. Missoula Defensible Space is fully insured for wildfire mitigation and forestry work in the state of Montana.

Yes. We can perform work to meet specific insurance audit requirements or Firewise USA® community standards to help you maintain coverage or reduce premiums.

While defensible space can be created year-round, we prefer to perform heavy thinning and brush removal during the dormant season (late fall through early spring). This minimizes stress on your trees, reduces the risk of beetle infestation in fresh cuts, and prepares your property well before the peak of fire season.
No. After our initial on-site consultation and “walk-through” of the project goals, our crew operates independently. We pride ourselves on disciplined execution and respect for your privacy; we treat your land as if it were our own.

Mitigation is not a one-time event; it is an ongoing stewardship. Depending on the growth rate of your specific vegetation, we recommend a light maintenance “touch-up” every 2–3 years to manage new growth and ensure your Zone 0 and Zone 1 buffers remain code-compliant.

Absolutely. Navigating DNRC or FireSafe Montana grants can be technical. We provide the specific project descriptions, maps, and thinning specifications required by auditors to help ensure your application is professional and positioned for approval.
